1) Is christiananswers.net pretty legit, or is it far out there? I mean, is it something that speaks for a large number of people, or is it really just representing a small cross section of Christians?
2) Where is a good home for old bridesmaids dresses? None of mine are going to move with me.
3) Where do you have to go to get rid of furniture? Do I have to find a dump somewhere?
4) Is it bad that I know that it's easier to eat sushi with your fingers than it is to eat it with a fork? (Chopsticks beat them both, though!)
5) Any helpful hints for moving would be greatly appreciated! Like how do I decide what to keep and what to toss? Or what are some good rental agencies for loading up my stuff? Or where am I going to find boxes? Or how do I organize stuff? Or how do I safely pack a TV?
I know in Chicago there was a program called ( I think) project Cinderella that helped low-income high school girls to get second-hand (donated) prom gowns. I'm betting that bridesmaids' dresses would fit the bill. If you googled it for where you are, something like that might come up!
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion for moving is to buy one tote of a unique color (I of course chose purple) Inside that tote I put all the items I would need immediately or would want to be able to find easily (extra checks, camera, tv remotes, any paperwork for new job or home). I actually kept that tote in the car instead of the truck but that way I knew just where to find the things I would otherwise pack up and not find for MONTHS. Also- when we moved, we lived in temporary housing for about a month- therefore I clearly marked with colored duct tape an X on any boxes that I would want to access first so I knew what order to UNPACK my boxes. HOpe this helps.
ReplyDeleteAs for furniture= either a Goodwill or I have seen some people post on Craigslist that they are leaving their Free couch on the curb at a certain address and hopefully it gets picked up?
Ill be thinking of you with all the packing and throwing out!
1. Not sure...
ReplyDelete2. I agree with Sarah... I think there is a charity that takes formal dresses like that. If there isn't one around your area, try Goodwill or some other thrift store.
3. I would donate the furniture to Goodwill as well. If it's really nice and you have the time and patience, try Craigslist to get some money from it. If it isn't good enough to donate, I set some of it on the curb. When I moved from Atchison I left out a small chest of drawers that was kind of beat up. Within one hour it was gone. People love to dumpster dive. However, I might check with the town you live in... sometimes people get in trouble for leaving stuff on the curb and have "city-wide pick up" for big items, but Atchison was a small enough town to get away with it!
4. I've never had sushi... and I'm not supposed to eat it while preggo. Not sure I could find the courage to try it anyways!
5. The only thing I can say about moving a TV... put it in your car, surround it by pillows, and seatbelt it in. That's how I've always moved my TV. Other than that, I am the most disorganized person when it comes to moving. That's why I can turn somewhat evil when I move... it's way too stressful!!!
Looks like you have your answers covered!
ReplyDelete1. No idea, but it looks like they could use some help with web design :) The about us page says they're related to Films for Christ, which I've never heard of. Looking at no more than that page, I think they probably represent evangelicals, and non-denominational "Bible Christian" types.
2. Agree with donating it for a prom gown or to Goodwill.
3. Agree with Goodwill, Craig's List, or curb. (You could just say it's free on Craig's list to whoever comes and picks it up off the curb first.)
4. Ew, sushi!
5. If you haven't used something in X amount of time (say a year or two), get rid of it. You can buy cardboard boxes or rubbermaids, or you can try to get free boxes by going to stores and just asking for their extra boxes. Restaurants, department stores, places like that usually have boxes that they're throwing out and you can ask them to save some for you. I agree with Maggie about the TV moving - that's what we've done.
Good luck!
Pack what you're really certain you need/want first. Then when you've tossed/given away the easy stuff and you're wasting endless amounts of time on the rest, invoke the $10 rule. If you're uncertain and you've not used it in the past few months check the value. Everything worth less than $10 goes.
ReplyDeleteI've no clue if that is a good fit for you, but it has been one of the most helpful rules for me! Best wishes for your move!
craigslist EVERYTHING. seriously. If you put it up, it will get sold. Do it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alison! Craigslist...and Sushi is the best! Yum, especially after a day at the beach!
